Dr. Kristy Hawley MD MPH, Acute Care Surgery Fellow, R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center, University of Maryland Medical School
Prior to her fellowship training at Shock Trauma, Dr. Hawley completed a general surgery residency training program at MedStar Health in Baltimore, MD. Dr. Hawley received her medical degree from the GW School of Medicine and Health Sciences. During her medical studies she was a Scholar at the Office for Clinical Practice Innovation at GW SMHS where she used her health policy and public health background to advocate for policies that benefit both patients and the medical profession. During her time at GW SMHS, Dr. Hawley completed a Health Policy Fellowship in the office of Senator Bill Cassidy MD, where she provided research and policy assistance on issues surrounding U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regulatory policy and public health. She was also Co-Director of the GW Healing Clinic, GW’s student-run clinic, where her work with her classmates was instrumental to opening a new clinic site in Prince George’s County, Maryland.
Prior to pursuing a career in medicine, she received her Master of Public Health from The Dartmouth Institute for Health Policy and Clinical Practice. Additionally Dr. Hawley worked as a Research Assistant and Program Director for Health Policy at the American Enterprise Institute for scholars in the health policy department. She worked most closely for Dr. Scott Gottlieb, former FDA Commissioner, who inspired her to pursue a career in medicine.
Dr. Hawley has served on various committees through the American Medical Association (AMA), the American College of Surgeons (ACS) and recently through both the Eastern Association for the Surgery of Trauma (EAST) and the American Association for the Surgery of Trauma (AAST). She is currently a member of the American College of Surgeons Health Policy & Advocacy Committee. She served as a Councilor on the AMA Council on Medical Service from 2015-2016.
Dr. Hawley was selected by her peers to be an inductee of the Gold Humanism Honor Society that recognizes individuals who are exemplars of humanistic patient care and who serve as role models, mentors, and leaders in medicine. She was the recipient of the AMA Foundation’s 2015 Leadership Award, which is a national award that recognizes medical students, residents, and early career physicians for achievements in community service, medical education, and public health. Dr. Hawley received the 2015 National Quality Scholar Award from the American College of Medical Quality in recognition of her interest and leadership in improving the quality of the health care system.
